NHL Building Blocks – January 22
Four games tonight, and we have some great spots to look at, including a lot of stud goalies. Where can we attack? Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – January 22
The Goalie: Jacob Markstrom
Might have the best (relatively speaking) matchup on the slate, but it’s by no means a slam dunk. Still, Markstrom (21-9-5 / 2.20 / .912) has been elite his first season in New Jersey, and the Devils are at home and the Bruins have been underachieving all season.
The Center: Auston Matthews
Goals in four straight games and has eight in the nine contests since coming off the injury list. Columbus’s defense is average at best, so he should have all the chances he can handle.
The Wing: David Pastrnak
Boston has been off all season, but Pasta is getting hot at the right time as they look to make a move in the second half, scoring five goals and adding six assists over his past five games. Jersey’s defense is solid, but he’s got a good floor as he’s still a volume shooter.
The Defenseman: Zach Werenski
The two highest-ceiling defensemen are on the slate tonight, but I like this game a little better than the one Makar is in, so I’m rolling with Werenski who’s inserted himself into the Norris conversation. Leads the team in points while averaging close to four shots per game.
The Value: Bobby McMann
Skating on PP1 with Tavares out (and centering Nylander on L2). 13 goals in 40 games.
The Stack: TOR (Matthews-Marner-Nylander)
Will likely be the chalk offense of the slate, but I’m going with them as the Leafs’ offense is consolidated around these three (plus Tavares who is injured). Mix in Knies as a nice secondary piece (and who has 18 goals of his own).
