NHL Building Blocks – December 1
First day of December…really feels like the holidays are just around the corner. Four games on this afternoon’s slate to kick off the last month of the year. Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – December 1
The Goalie: Jeremy Swayman
Great spot for the struggling Bruins as they host the Canadiens, a team that struggles offensively, including shooting the puck, averaging below 24 shots per game, the lowest mark in the league. Boston’s defense is fairly solid, and Swayman (6-9-2 / 3.09 / .892) is looking for a spot to get him back on track. Small slate, but I can’t argue the spot for him here.
The Center: Mark Scheifele
With Ehlers possibly missing, Scheifele and the rest of the Jets’ stud forwards will get a little extra ice time; he’s second on the team in scoring with 26 points in 24 games and will be needed in a tough matchup.
The Wing: David Pastrnak
Somewhat of a matchup play here, though Pasta has still been close to his usual productive self this season; he’s only got eight goals through 25 games, but he does have 100 shots on goal to lead the league. Boston has just not been that good this season, but they do have a good matchup today, so I’m happy with going with Pasta for his floor and his upside.
The Defenseman: Zach Werenski
One of the most underrated skaters in the league, Werenski has five goals and nine helpers during his seven-game point streak, and he leads the Blue Jackets in points, ice time (barely under 26 minutes per game), and shots on goal (almost four per game).
The Value: Alex Newhook
Up on L1 with Caufield and Suzuki (and still centering PP2); Bruins are down defensively this season and he’s cheap.
The Stack: CBJ (Monahan-Marchenko-Werenski-Voronkov)
The Blue Jackets have finally gotten some solid offensive production from some of their skaters, and against a bad Blackhawks team, I like this group here (and they’ll be cheaper than some of the other stacks on the slate). 29 of the team’s 77 goals have come from this quartet.
