Part the Cloud: A Deep Dive into Wide Receivers and Defensive Schemes for Week 7

Welcome back to another week of “Part the Cloud”, where we delve into defensive coverage schemes and uncover hidden gem wide receivers ready to shine.

Last Week’s Performance: A Quick Review

Let’s recap last week’s results in the context of the DraftKings Milly Maker:

  • Noah Brown: 9.8 fantasy points (FPTS) at 2.4% ownership (2.5x)
  • Rashod Bateman: 11.1 FPTS at 7.6% ownership (2.7x)
  • Jalen Tolbert: 8.3 FPTS at 24.3% ownership (1.7x)

The outcomes improved from previous weeks, though we still fell short of hitting paydirt. Bateman and Brown were poised for breakout performances, while Tolbert’s potential was hampered by a lackluster Cowboys offense.

Looking Ahead: Week 7 Slate

If last week left you uneasy, I recommend finding your zen—it’s going to get spicy this week.

Jordan Whittington

  • DraftKings: $4,800
  • Projected Ownership: 1.43%
  • FanDuel: $5,300
  • Projected Ownership: 1.72%

Whittington piques my interest this week. While there’s buzz around Cooper Kupp’s return to practice, SIC Score’s doctors suggest he might not be effective. This opens the door for Whittington as the primary air threat. He excels after the catch and should be a focal point against the Raiders’ Cover 3 defense. We expect him to face Jack Jones, an aggressive corner known for jumping routes—this could lead to big plays if he misjudges. With 18 targets over the last two weeks and double-digit yards per reception, Whittington has the potential for a significant impact.

Romeo Doubs

  • DraftKings: $4,100
  • Projected Ownership: 1.67%
  • FanDuel: $5,500
  • Projected Ownership: 2.61%

Doubs stands out in a Packers receiving corps projected for low ownership but high implied team totals. Houston predominantly plays zone defense, and Doubs has shown solid usage and results in his return. He’s one of the top zone-beating receivers on the team, crucial as the matchup isn’t favorable for running backs or tight ends. Doubs will need to step up and deliver.

Jalen Coker

  • DraftKings: $3,000
  • Projected Ownership: 3.49%
  • FanDuel: $4,200
  • Projected Ownership: 2.24%

Coker is set to line up in the slot against a rookie corner who has struggled, allowing a high catch rate and multiple touchdowns. While Carolina will attempt to control the clock, they’ll eventually need to air it out. Coker has caught all 7 of his targets over the last two weeks, becoming a reliable option for Dalton. As Xavier Legette excels against zone schemes but falters against man coverage, Coker’s presence is essential.

In My Mentions: Khalil Shakir

  • DraftKings: $6,000
  • Projected Ownership: 0.98%
  • FanDuel: $6,200
  • Projected Ownership: 2.11%

Tennessee presents a tough matchup, excelling in defending various skill positions. The best approach is through the slot, where McCreary has been vulnerable, allowing catches on two-thirds of targets. Shakir is adept at beating zone coverage, having delivered impressive performances for Buffalo in the past. Though the price and matchup aren’t particularly inviting, he’s worth considering if you’re multi-entering this slate.
