NHL Building Blocks – October 10
Third night of the season with a great nine-game slate and 11 teams playing their season opener. Let’s dive in!
The premise of each article in this series is to feature starting spots (building blocks) for your lines. These are plays that are cash-viable as well as GPP-worthy and can be considered in all contest formats.
Starting Lineup – October 10
The Goalie: Filip Gustavsson
Hard to imagine what the Columbus team and fan base are going through, but it is a spot we can attack DFS-wise. Gus was solid last season, and the Wild home opener against a bad Blue Jackets club (situation notwithstanding) makes for a safe cash floor with some good tournament upside.
The Center: Macklin Celebrini
The #1 overall pick makes his NHL debut tonight at home against a Blues team that looked fine in their opener on Wednesday. FanDuel has priced him up ($6400), but you can lock him in cash on DraftKings at almost minimum price ($3000).
The Wing: Lucas Raymond
Raymond is coming off a career season in which he led the team in scoring and was rewarded with an eight-year, $64 million contract. He’s too cheap (especially on DK) in this matchup against an old Penguins team on the second half of a back-to-back.
The Defenseman: Roman Josi
The most expensive defenseman on the slate, but for good reason: his floor is ridiculously high and he has tournament-winning upside. Last season he had 85 points playing in all 82 games to go along with averaging over three and a half shots and one and a half blocked shots per game.
The Value: Tommy Novak
Novak had 45 points last season bouncing between the second and third lines for the Predators, and now he finds himself in the incredible position of centering Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault on Nashville’s second line (as well as centering the PP2 line). Great upside for cheap.
The Stack: BOS1 (Pastrnak/Lindholm/Zacha)
This line played well in their opening-game loss to the defending champs, accounting for two of Boston’s four goals, and tonight they get a Canadiens team on the second half of a back-to-back. Solid stack here (and mix in McAvoy as all four are on L1/PP1 together).
