DFS SMART GOALS: Improving GPP/MME Process

In my day job, I am an Assistant Principal. Funny story: before getting the assistant principal job, I was a finalist for the varsity head coaching position with our current head coach. Awkward, right?! Actually, we have grown to have a great relationship as I spend my time supporting his missions from a leadership end.

Using the off-season to work on skills

Coach has managed to turn around a losing program, because he came in with a plan! Therefore, I talked to coach and he told me his goals for the upcoming season, then his staff developed an off-season conditioning program to align with those goals, which created a connection to my work as a DFS Player.

Likewise, after the meeting with coach, I asked myself how am I utilizing the off-season to improve my NFL DFS game? The answer was, nothing at all.

Upon reflection:

and talking to great coaches in the DFSA, I found that one can begin to use the off-season in order to analyze film, run reports on large tournament finish percentages for reflection and reinforcement. However, my favorite off-season activity is utilizing NHL with the idea of developing a greater understanding of correlations in order to rely less on what I think I know about football and more on the systematic principles of the sport.

Disclaimer: I am a coach at heart, so I am never going to tell someone how to do something, as NHL is what I enjoy to do. Maybe you have something else you are thinking about? Give it a shot! Use coaches and pros to bounce your ideas off of and guess what?? Now you are developing your own system for taking tournaments down! 

SMART Goals

SMART: S= Specific, M=measurable, A=attainable, R=Realistic, T=Time bound. In my teaching career, I worked with students on fitness every year, and I remember the goal setting being one of the most meaningful lessons I taught. This is because all aspects of life involve setting goals and plans around those goals.

Is Not SMART

My goal for the upcoming NFL season is to win a lot of money and spend less than I win. 

^^^This is not measurable, it is not attainable as I can’t even measure it and it has no time for it. 

Is SMART

For the upcoming NFL season is to be able to play with a 200$ bankroll, playing 10% per NFL event, with the final goal of getting at least 1 top 2% finish within the duration of the NFL Regular season (Large Field GPP). 

^^So I am reading this and I see why my wife calls me the king of “extra” now, because I actually wrote more than I needed to, but it isn’t all bad in that now you have an example of a plan and a SMART Goal.

Bringing it all together

If you scroll up and read what is a SMART goal, you will notice: 

• It is specifically talking about NFL GPP tournaments 
• It is measurable in that I provide data that I can use as a measuring stick
• It is attainable in that at least 1 top 2% finish is not out of the realm of outcomes
• It is realistic in that I am using a 6% bankroll for GPPs, which means I will not be playing the millionaire maker. 
• It is time bound in that it specifically states the duration of the NFL regular season

Adopting principles such as SMART goals has helped me:

• recover from former degenerate behavior by increasing accountability
• bankroll management, while providing me with realistic landmarks that I can achieve.

**Furthermore, this sport has such a psychological aspect to it and improving goal setting will help improve your confidence by having realistic landmarks to achieve regularly. 

Back to Coach and I’s Relationship

Coach and I interviewed for the same job, but we have the most amazing relationship now! How did that even happen? One word, HUMILITY.

Unfortunately, I would have never connected with coach because of my lack of humility. However, I was blessed with my wife and kids which taught me quickly the world does not revolve around me. The concept of being the center of  your own world contributes to the human inclination to lack humility.  However, love conquers all, and you can overcome this by finding someone or something you love more than yourself. Find things you love more than yourself because it will never change if you make it about you. Make it about others and succeed!
