DFS NHL is a volatile sport centering around correlation, stacking and game theory. Learning how to win cash games and tournaments requires nailing those great upside plays/stacks, grabbing obvious value, and making the proper fades that sink everyone else’s ships. Let’s look through today’s slate and identify those winning picks in “Snipes, Grinders, and Hard Passes!”
Snipe = Good Play
Grinder = Value Plays (Grinders are Valuable)
Hard-Pass = I’m fading in tournaments
DFS NHL Slate Overview:
Another giant slate and another slate where you take the opposing goalie (Columbus’ goalie), as well as one of Draisaitl or McDavid in cash, with possibly Matthews as well (in cash games). We also take a sneak peak into the same defenseman I touted last article for being the blocked shot bonus king; well he did it again, and even scored a goal, and dropped in salary? Neat. Also, there is one stack that has gotten overlooked all season, and I will be mentioning them… first. Also, I will strictly be going over the DK prices tonight, because FD doesn’t have tomorrow’s slate up; and, I am currently writing this on Wednesday night.
Snipes and Hard Passes for Tonight
Correlated Snipe #1
Ryan Getzlaf $5500DK
Troy Terry $5500DK
Adam Henrique $5200DK
This is a line that fills the lineup well, doesn’t eat too much of your salary, and has a high ceiling that we are looking for in these GPP tournaments. The Canes are a terrific team, but so are the Anaheim Ducks early in the year, and they are probably the hottest team in the league to boot. They most likely still won’t garner ownership with so many actually popular players available at that price point. (Editor’s Note – Part of the reason you won’t see ownership on Ducks players is industry projections and optimizers. Most players don’t know how to appropriately force under-projected players into stacks and lineups. This is your edge! DFS Army teaches you how and when to adjust base projections for leverage…..the Anaheim Ducks have been a leverage team for a month. Have you played any of them? Most NHL DFS players haven’t either.)
The Ducks aren’t sexy, or noticeable when scrolling through, but the results cannot lie and their numbers are undeniable. Ryan Getzlaf either drank Jennifer Anniston’s youth/vampire potion, or sold his soul to the anti-christ himself, and is looking like the powerful playmaker he was in his mid 20’s. He is acting like dishing biscuits to Troy Terry is his day-job.. oh wait, it is. And Adam Henrique has just always been that reliable guy in his career that is getting a chance to open his game up with the dynamic pair of Getzlaf and Terry. I’m not fading the Ducks anymore, and I don’t think you should either.
Correlated Snipe #2
Mario Ferraro $4100
How did his price drop? I don’t understand this. Ferraro for me is a must in cash games on DK, and a decent tournament play, because people don’t play NHL players they don’t know very well. Shot blocking bonuses for days, he may fling a shot or 2, and with how many minutes he plays, he could luckbox you into an assist as well.
Correlated Snipe #3
Auston Matthews $8500DK
William Nylander $7500DK
Morgan Reilly $5900DK
I simply just love the talent, love the mindset, the pace of play, and the fact that they are at home. Toronto is finding their way a little bit, and both Nylander and Matthews are shooting the puck with high frequency. That while having Reilly quarterback the powerplay, and play a ton of minutes in general, makes this stack a high risk high reward situation that I am willing to bet on. The NYR are very talented and fast all the way around, but, they are not the most stout defensively (ask Connor McDavid’s highlight reel), and they give up a lot of odd-man rushes.
Any time the Edmonton boys are on the slate, the Matthews and Matthews’ stack ownership dwindles, and it is buy low and gamble time on the Toronto boys at home vs the NYR.
Hard Pass #1
Connor McDavid $9500
Leon Draisaitl $9100
I am getting ballsy, I know. But think about how much they have to do to get there and reach that 3X salary plateau you want to potentially bonk a tournament. I don’t mind either player in cash games, and I slightly prefer Draisaitl over McDavid do to his $400 savings and current hotness. The Jets just faced Edmonton, and the more and more team’s play, the more and more they figure out their ticks and what makes each team successful or potentially dangerous. The Jets may have an idea or 2 to slow the dynamic dup down. That, coupled with them needing like 2 or 3 hockey points and the 5 shots on goal bonus, and this becomes a fair simple fade for me personally.
NHL Grinder Value Plays
Grinder #1 Yegor Chinakov $3100DK- He just got his first NHL goal, and has a couple of assists to his name this year as well. I see this as a low risk high reward player; because shooters shooter, and once that first one goes in, look out
Grinder #2 Marin Necas $3700DK- Simply too talented in a pace up matchup, while potentially skating on the top line.
Grinder #3 Jamie Benn $3500DK- He scored a goal, and is as talented as he is, and his price dropped? Ok, let’s just go with that.
Good luck, I hope you all come in 2nd. 😉
