WNBA Strategy Picks for Today
Connecticut Sun @ Dallas Wings
The Sun are on a nine-game winning streak and are first in the standings. They’ll look to continue that momentum tonight as they battle to keep ahold of that top seed. Jonquel Jones is coming off a nice week and another player of the week award. She gets a fabulous matchup against a Wings team that doesn’t have anyone who can stop her. She is one of the top options on this slate and should dominate tonight. Brionna Jones has been amazing this season, fully coming into her own and showing that she isn’t just a supporting cast but a star in her own rights. She’s put up two 40+ Fpts showings in a row and will look to continue that tonight. DeWanna Bonner is currently in a three-game slump and inconsistencies have plagued her this season. That said, she has averaged 43.7 DKFPs in the two previous matchups against the Wings. She’ll look to bounce back here tonight. Jasmine Thomas rounds up the list here for the Sun tonight. She has been wildly inconsistent this season and is only ever viable in GPPs where you hope she has one of her outstanding games.
The Wings are in a tough battle for the last two playoff spots and will have to do it without Satou Sabally and Isabelle Harrison. Unfortunately for them, they face the best team in the league tonight and one they haven’t been able to crack all season. The best bet the Wings have if they will pull off a shocking upset here is Arike Ogunbowale. The star player on this team, she’ll need to put up 20+ shots for her team to have a chance tonight. Allisha Gray has played well recently, but this is a tough matchup for her. Without Sabally and Harrison in the frontcourt, Kayla Thornton will see a huge increase in minutes, although it is not clear that will do much good going up against the Joneses. Bella Alarie and Charli Collier will also see minutes increases to fill the void created by the injuries.
5-Star Play: Jonquel Jones, Brionna Jones
4-Star Play: DeWanna Bonner, Arike Ogunbowale
GPP Sleeper: Jasmine Thomas
Deep Value: Charli Collier
Washington Mystics @ Seattle Storm
The Mystics are currently in 9th place, fighting desperately for a playoff spot. The bad news is, they will be without Elena Delle Donne and Myisha Hines-Allen. It will also be a tough matchup against a Storm team that can be dominant in all phases of the game. On the bright side, the Mystics have Tina Charles available tonight and she has averaged 53.8 DKFPs in the previous two meetings against the Storm. With that kind of production, there’s always the chance the Mystics can steal this game. Theresa Plaisance and Erica McCall will be relied upon to fill the void created by the injuries, but both are risky options given the minute’s uncertainty they face. In the backcourt, Natasha Cloud has been playing really well recently and has a nice track record against the Storm this season. Her all-around game makes her a solid option in this matchup. Ariel Atkins continues to be plagued with inconsistency this season and can only be looked at as a GPP option. Her defensive abilities make her a nice option for the Mystics tonight if they plan on winning this game. Finally, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough could see a nice increase in minutes today. Injuries, along with her recent production, make her an interesting value option on the slate.
The Storm are battling for a top 2 seed in the playoffs and get an interesting matchup against the Mystics tonight, in what will be a fun-flowing game. Breanna Stewart is arguably the best player in the league and the matchup against Tina Charles will be an amazing one to watch all game. Stewart averaged 46.5 DKFPs in the two previous meetings and will need to put up similar numbers tonight to hold off the Mystics. Jewell Loyd finally had an average game last time out after a string of below-average performance and will look to build on that tonight. The Mystics have very good defensive guards, making this a tough spot for Loyd, but she is a scorer and can go off at any moment. Sue Bird remains the classic cash play, with a solid floor and okay ceiling. With Jordin Canada still out, Katie Lou Samuelson will get the start here and look to build on the good game she had against the Liberty. Stephanie Talbot rounds up the list as a potentially risky value play on the slate.
5-Star Play: Breanna Stewart, Tina Charles
4-Star Play: Natasha Cloud, Jewell Loyd
GPP Sleeper: Katie Lou Samuelson
Deep Value: Shatori Walker-Kimbrough
