My Take on a Consistent MLB DFS Process – Looking at Pitchers
I always start an MLB slate by looking at pitching, not only do you get a grasp on who the pitchers are that you want to target. But it also gives you an idea of what offenses are in good spots against bad/vulnerable pitchers. I start my research by going straight to the Nilly’s MLB Carnage Report, this is where we can analyze all the pitchers on the slate in a compact, yet detailed manner. Below are the three pitchers that popped out to me at first glance.
- Walker Buehler
- Lance Lynn
- Mike Clevinger

Watching the weather is half the battle when it comes to MLB DFS. The DFS Army Weather Station has you covered, from games that have delay and postponement potential, to games that could have significant winds that will play a roll in selecting a team to stack or a pitcher to use.
New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays (-111)
Starting Pitchers:
Yankees – JA Happ
Blue Jays – Taijuan Walker
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 10.5 runs. We should see some more offense here after Monday’s game saw 18 runs cross the plate. The Blue Jays busted out with a 10 run 6th inning and while Happ is a “name” pitcher, he hasn’t been great and this ballpark is very inviting for offense at this point.
NYY 5-star plays: Miguel Andujar
4-star plays: DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit
GPP Note: Team ISO of .111 over the last 9 games.
TOR 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Randal Grichuk
GPP Note: Team ISO of .175 over the last 8 games.

Miami Marlins @ Atlanta Braves (-115)
Starting Pitchers:
Marlins – Sixto Sanchez
Braves – Kyle Wright
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 9 runs. This is really interesting to me as Wright has been HORRENDOUS at the MLB level as he just walks way too many hitters while Sanchez has been electric. The Braves offense is rolling while the Marlins have been solid. I think this game is going to have some runs scored and I would be betting the over.
MIA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Corey Dickerson
GPP Note: Team ISO of .181 over the last 6 games.
ATL 5-star plays: Freddie Freeman
4-star plays: Marcel Ozuna, Ronald Acuna Jr
GPP Note: Team ISO of .316 over the last 7 games.
Winning at MLB DFS is about correlation and constructing lineups that can actually win a big GPP. Take full advantage of positive variance with an optimizer giving you the ability to build around historically winning combinations of players.

Tampa Bay Rays (-155) @ Washington Nationals
Starting Pitchers:
Rays – Ryan Yarbrough
Nationals – Anibal Sanchez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 9.5 runs. Yarbrough is making his return from the IL while Sanchez is just trying to figure out what is going wrong on the mound. The Nationals lineup has had success against LHPs but it’s tough to fall in love with what they run out there without Juan Soto.
TB 5-star plays: Randy Arozarena
4-star plays: Willy Adames
GPP Note: Team ISO of .207 over the last 6 games.
WAS 5-star plays: Trea Turner
4-star plays: Howie Kendrick
GPP Note: Team ISO of .149 over the last 8 games.

Kansas City Royals @ Cleveland Indians (-235)
Starting Pitchers:
Royals – Jakob Junis
Indians – Triston McKenzie
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 8.5 runs. The Indians have some strong BvP (mainly Lindor) against Junis but they underwhelmed against him recently. McKenzie has been really solid over his first 3 starts and is a monster favorite here. I see no reason to avoid going back to him on this slate.
KC 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Alex Gordon
GPP Note: Team ISO of .088 over the last 7 games.
CLE 5-star plays: Francisco Lindor
4-star plays: Tyler Naquin, Carlos Santana
GPP Note: Team ISO of .160 over the last 6 games.
Baltimore Orioles @ New York Mets (-190)
Starting Pitchers:
Orioles – John Means
Mets – Michael Wacha
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 10 runs. The Orioles offense has cooled quite a bit as they have dealt with a couple of injuries recently. Mets hitters are rolling right now and Conforto is in the discussion for MVP at this point, which is somewhat shocking. Means has looked pretty bad out there and hasn’t approached the guy that was an All-Star in 2019.
BAL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Jose Iglesias, Ryan Mountcastle
GPP Note: Team ISO of .183 over the last 7 games.
NYM 5-star plays: Michael Conforto
4-star plays: JD Davis, Pete Alonso
GPP Note: Team ISO of .253 over the last 7 games.
Cincinnati Reds (-111) @ Chicago Cubs
Starting Pitchers:
Reds – Tyler Mahle
Cubs – Alec Mills
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 7.5 runs. Both SPs are now in play as the wind is blowing in pretty significantly at Wrigley. I wanted to be on both offenses but now I have to reverse course.
CIN 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Nicholas Castellanos, Eugenio Suarez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .202 over the last 7 games.
CHC 5-star plays: Kyle Schwarber
4-star plays: Ian Happ, Willson Contreras
GPP Note: Team ISO of .145 over the last 7 games.
Houston Astros @ Oakland Athletics – Game 1
Starting Pitchers:
Astros – Zack Greinke
Athletics – Frankie Montas
Rundown:
Waiting on Vegas information.
HOU 5-star plays: Kyle Tucker, George Springer
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, Carlos Correa
GPP Note: Team ISO of .204 over the last 7 games.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ramon Laureano, Matt Chapman (day-to-day)
GPP Note: Team ISO of .124 over the last 3 games (COVID).
Houston Astros @ Oakland Athletics – Game 2
Starting Pitchers:
Astros – Undecided
Athletics – Mike Minor
Rundown:
Waiting on Vegas information.
HOU 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Yuli Gurriel, George Springer
GPP Note: Team ISO of .204 over the last 7 games.
OAK 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ramon Laureano, Matt Chapman (day-to-day)
GPP Note: Team ISO of .124 over the last 3 games (COVID).
Los Angeles Angels (-120) @ Texas Rangers
Starting Pitchers:
Angels – Andrew Heaney
Rangers – Lance Lynn
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 8 runs. Initially, I saw Teheran listed as the starter for the Angels and was blown away that they were favored with him on the road, against Lynn. Heaney makes a lot more sense as the favored pitcher here. The Rangers lineup is pretty weak, top to bottom, and Heaney has been solid all season long. Lynn is a strong option here, even as an underdog.
LAA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Justin Upton, Mike Trout
GPP Note: Team ISO of .195 over the last 7 games.
TEX 5-star plays: Isiah Kiner-Falefa
4-star plays: Nick Solak
GPP Note: Team ISO of .169 over the last 6 games.
Colorado Rockies @ San Diego Padres (-240)
Starting Pitchers:
Rockies – Chi Chi Gonzalez
Padres – Mike Clevinger
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 9. I love the upside that Clevinger offers us, even though he is still getting used to the move to the Padres and the change in C’s (Nola-Castro were both brought in via trade). The Padres lost Hosmer to a broken finger on Monday night so they are going to be glad they picked up Moreland via trade.
COL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Raimel Tapia
GPP Note: Team ISO of .198 over the last 6 games.
SD 5-star plays: Manny Machado
4-star plays: Fernando Tatis Jr, Wil Myers
GPP Note: Team ISO of .182 over the last 6 games.
Seattle Mariners @ San Francisco Giants (-157)
Starting Pitchers:
Mariners – Ljay Newsome
Giants – Logan Webb
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 8.5 runs. The Giants bats have been scoring some runs as they just ended Zac Gallen’s MLB record streak on Monday night. They don’t have a TON of upside against RHPs in general but they are putting up numbers and Newsome is pretty much an unknown. Webb has been solid and he faces a pretty weak lineup.
SEA 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Dylan Moore, Kyle Seager
GPP Note: Team ISO of .154 over the last 4 games.
SF 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Belt
GPP Note: Team ISO of .295 over the last 5 games.
Boston Red Sox @ Philadelphia Phillies – Game 1
Starting Pitchers:
Red Sox – Martin Perez
Phillies – Zach Eflin
Rundown:
Waiting on Vegas information.
BOS 5-star plays: Alex Verdugo
4-star plays: Rafael Devers, JD Martinez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .199 over the last 8 games.
PHI 5-star plays: Andrew McCutchen
4-star plays: Jean Segura, Didi Gregorius
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 over the last 7 games.
Boston Red Sox @ Philadelphia Phillies (-170) – Game 2
Starting Pitchers:
Red Sox – Chris Mazza
Phillies – Vince Velasquez
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 8 runs. I very much want the PHI side here as Mazza doesn’t do it for me. Velasquez has some rough spots but this BOS squad isn’t exactly scaring me (even though they are scoring runs in game 1).
BOS 5-star plays: Alex Verdugo
4-star plays: Rafael Devers, JD Martinez
GPP Note: Team ISO of .199 over the last 8 games.
PHI 5-star plays: Andrew McCutchen
4-star plays: Jean Segura, Didi Gregorius
GPP Note: Team ISO of .158 over the last 7 games.
Chicago White Sox (-142) @ Pittsburgh Pirates
Starting Pitchers:
White Sox – Dylan Cease
Pirates – Joe Musgrove
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 9.5 runs. Musgrove is a guy that I can never figure out and he generally surprises in spots where you expect him to get hit. The White Sox bats have cooled a bit but they do still offer a ton of upside as Musgrove has given up 4 HRs in 17.2 innings this season and he gave up 15 in 88.1 innings at home in 2019. Cease has had some HR issues on the road this season as he has allowed 7 HRs in 25.1 road innings.
CWS 5-star plays: Yasmani Grandal, Jose Abreu
4-star plays: Edwin Encarnacion, Nomar Mazara
GPP Note: Team ISO of .139 over the last 7 games.
PIT 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Colin Moran, Gregory Polanco
GPP Note: Team ISO of .146 over the last 8 games.
Milwaukee Brewers (-120) @ Detroit Tigers
Starting Pitchers:
Brewers – Adrian Houser
Tigers – Spencer Turnbull
Rundown:
This game has opened with a total set at 8.5. We just saw these pitchers face their opponents recently and the Brewers got to Turnbull a bit. He has a solid match-up as the Brewers are striking out a ton against RHPs and he gets to face them at home this time. A few Tigers bats are hot at the plate and could cause some problems for Houser as he has been allowing a ton of contact. His K numbers are almost non-existent (had just 2 against DET in his last start).
MIL 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Ben Gamel, Keston Hiura
GPP Note: Team ISO of .140 over the last 6 games.
DET 5-star plays: Victor Reyes
4-star plays: Willi Castro, Jonathan Schoop
GPP Note: Team ISO of .172 over the last 6 games.
Los Angeles Dodgers (-225) @ Arizona Diamondbacks
Starting Pitchers:
Dodgers – Walker Buehler
Diamondbacks – Luke Weaver
Rundown:
This game has a total set at 9 runs. Buehler has been extremely sharp over his last couple of starts and the K numbers have returned for him as he takes on a struggling offense. Weaver looked solid against the Dodgers in his last start but had been really bad prior to that. The Dodgers smacked him around earlier this season so he has one good and one bad start against them so far in 2020.
LAD 5-star plays: Corey Seager
4-star plays: AJ Pollock, Cody Bellinger
GPP Note: Team ISO of .217 over the last 6 games.
ARI 5-star plays: NONE
4-star plays: Christian Walker, Ketel Marte
GPP Note: Team ISO of .130 over the last 6 games.
Stacks of the Day: Main Slate
- San Diego Padres
- New York Mets
- Los Angeles Dodgers
MLB Dinger of the Day – Francisco Lindor, Cleveland Indians
